We like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens as much as the next Julie Andrews fan, but if you want a few of Austinite Britt Daniel's favorite things, you're more likely talking about cold beer, cheap kicks, and falling-off-the-bone barbecue. The frontman for engagingly askew rock outfit Spoon shared some of his Texas hometown's best bits, offering a SXSW primer.
Lala's
(2207 Justin Ln., 512-453-2521)
''The bar is decorated like
Christmas all the time, and it's run by sort of...little old ladies. The
jukebox is all real 45s Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Glenn Miller. And
you get, like, seven plays for a dollar.''
Matt's El Rancho
(2613 S. Lamar Blvd., 512-462-9333)
''There's so much
great Mexican in Austin, and so many different styles. Matt's is very
old-school it's been around for 50 years. Some of my friends won't go
anywhere else.''
Salt Lick BBQ
(18300 FM Rd. 1826, Driftwood, Tex.; 512-858-4959)
''Probably the best barbecue I've ever had. It's, like, 25 miles outside
the city, but they get a lot of business during SXSW. I would say that
Ruby's BBQ [512 W. 29th St., 512-477-1651], though, is the best for
in-town barbecue.''
Emo's
(603 Red River St., 512-477-3667)
''The granddaddy. It's a really
big place and all-ages, so they get a lot of touring bands, and also
local shows. They put a big 'X' on your hand if you're a minor, and it's
like five more bucks to get in. When I was underage, that kind of
sucked, but I was still glad I got to see the shows.''
Broken Spoke
(3201 S. Lamar Blvd., 512-442-6189)
''They have really good
chicken-fried steak. I think that's the best hangover breakfast.''
