Even devotees of Richard Kelly's 2001 trippy thriller Donnie Darko may not know what to make of Southland Tales. Neither, it seems, did Kelly. His schizophrenic epic blends political satire, time travel, gunplay, and an aluminum-foil-clad Wallace Shawn. The result is equal parts beguiling and confounding, like this deep thought from Gellar's porn star-turned-activist: ''Scientists are saying that the future is going to be far more futuristic than they had originally predicted.'' EXTRAS An apocalyptic animated short and a making-of doc don't clear up the smoke. C
