In another time and place, Destroyer frontman-songwriter Dan Bejar might
have been a poet scraping by on NEH grants. Instead, he's set his
literate aphorisms to brooding rock music and become an indie darling. Trouble in Dreams adheres to the path laid out by his band's previous albums: Over
shimmering guitars, Bejar warbles lines like ''They stuck eternity inside
a bird's fist just to watch it fly'' and insists we revel in his pretzel
logic. It's not hard to do, given Bejar's bruised romanticism; he's
convincingly sensitive even at his most arch.
