Black Magic Soundtrack (2008)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Mar 11, 2008; Genre: R&B

Of the 50-plus vintage tunes that score Black Magic, a new four-hour ESPN doc about basketball at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Arthur Conley perennial ''Sweet Soul Music'' probably didn't need to make the cut. And what do Scottish funkateers Average White Band have to do with the black struggle? The spark off the bench is the never-on-pop-charts, horn-driven groove of acts like Black Heat. And sign us up for practicing layups to Graham Central Station! As far as ESPN music goes, we'll take this over Jock Jams any day. B+
