Beyond

EW's GRADE
B+

Following 1998's album of reshaped cover tunes, Joshua Redman comes out swinging, soulfully, on the all-original set Beyond. His fine quartet, highlighted by pianist-to-watch Aaron Goldberg, lends heat and wisdom to the material. But Redman's writing falls behind his playing, which is what wins us over: Its freshness, honesty, and ferocity reconfirm his status as the saxist of his generation. B+
