One reason Safe Passage flunked out of theaters is that it's a contained family drama centered on a mother figure, and ''women's movies'' don't do well even in the best of times. The other reason is that Deena Goldstone's script is so abysmal it's stunning. Carefully constructed so that not one genuine moment occurs in the story of an implausibly dewy mom of seven boys who simultaneously faces filial tragedy and a crisis of self-hood, it torments its fine cast and audience equally.
