In Roommates Wanted, a predictable and occasionally charming novel, Leah, a London shopgirl in a dysfunctional relationship, meets a neighbor named Toby, a poet who can’t say no to the needy, messed-up tenants living in the Victorian house he inherited from his deadbeat dad. In addition to Leah and Toby, each tenant gets his or her own backstory, making for a dizzying read with minimal payoff. With lines like ''[She] hoped that maybe today her destiny would come find her'' and ''My life was as grey as it gets...and then, well, you came along. And made everything Technicolor,'' extra characters are the least of Lisa Jewell’s problems. C+
