In wistful drama The Good Night, Gary (Martin Freeman) avoids his dreary life with nagging girlfriend Dora (Gwyneth Paltrow) by dozing off into a gauzy dreamworld inhabited by an idealized beauty (Penélope Cruz). This feature debut from writer-director Jake Paltrow (Gwyneth's brother) is assured and appealing, even as it overplays Gary's misery — it would be easier to believe he's longing for his lost happiness with Dora if she weren't such a shrew.
