All About
American IdolIn a shock to fans, fellow competitors, and the judges, Australian rocker Michael Johns was voted out of the competition on this week's American Idol results show. It was Johns' first appearance in the bottom three; Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson were the other two contenders at risk of being sent home. After the announcement, Ryan Seacrest teased the possibility that Johns would not have to leave, recalling the precedent set by last season's ''Idol Gives Back'' reprieve. However, the Aussie, who performed Aerosmith's ''Dream On'' on Tuesday's show, was ultimately given his walking papers, stepping out into the audience to sing the song one more time. Also performing tonight was season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, who sang her hit ''No Air'' with Chris Brown. The episode also featured taped appearances by presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Barack Obama, each of whom made appeals for continued support of ''Idol Gives Back,'' as did celebs including Bono, Jim Carrey, and Forrest Whitaker.
