Young Man (1991)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Billy Dean; Genre: Country

A former finalist in the nationwide Wrangler Country Star Search talent contest, Dean is an impressive newcomer, writing sophisticated country-pop with a strong sense of melody and rhythm and a definite point of view. He's an impassioned vocalist, best at capturing the restlessness and anxiety of youth and romance. Dean infuses his intelligent ballads on Young Man, including the bittersweet ''Somewhere in My Broken Heart,'' with a believable sense of angst. In a year with lots of fast-rising new talent, Billy Dean is a standout.
