A homophobic retired band guard (De Niro) suffers a debilitating stroke and has to make nice with a sassy drag queen neighbor (Hoffman) in order to get his speech back. While De Niro is affectingly understated, Hoffman is so over the top he makes The Birdcage's Nathan Lane look macho. And writer-director Joel Schumacher pours on the pathos as the film builds to a strained action-movie climax. It's a drag all right just not the fun kind. C+
