Ironically enough, there's never been anything kooky about the Kooks.
The English quartet's sophomore CD Konk is another batch of British Invasion
homages, complete with familiar guitar riffs and romantic lyrics that
summon the spirit of '66. Even as they shamelessly pillage the
songwriting techniques of the Beatles, Stones, and Kinks, the Kooks also
manage to capture a bit of their idols' effusive energy (arguably a
tougher task). Is this groundbreaking, breathtaking, shockingly fresh
music? Of course not. But it's hard not to get caught up in the lads'
enthusiasm. B+
