Dressing up Sean Hickman's second album with fretless bass, cool-jazz arrangements, and other Joni Mitchell trappings doesn't obscure the down-to-earth individuality and intelligence of this Texan's acoustic-guitar songs. A witty partisan in the war of the sexes, Hickman sings in a fine, clear voice, matching Shortstop's stylistic variety with impressive emotional range. B
