Music for a Darkened Theater (1990)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Danny Elfman; Genre: Soundtracks

The same overstuffed quality that weakens Danny Elfman's music for his rock group, Oingo Boingo, can make his movie compositions a real hoot. Elfman piles instruments atop each other in kinetic, incongruous combinations: Galloping piano and brass compete with square-dance strings, jazzy woodwinds, and spectral vocals. In Music for a Darkened Theater, the best stuff is from 13 movies and 4 TV shows is his recent work for Batman, Beetlejuice, and The Simpsons.B
