BANG FOR THE BUCK Chuck Palahniuk's Snuff may seem sordid on the surface, but it's difficult in the end to deny the attraction

The premise of veteran shock writer Chuck Palahniuk's latest book is borderline offensive: A famous porn star seeks to break a world record by — ahem — romancing 600 men on film. Yet, somewhere along the way, you forget the somewhat unsettling setup and get drawn into the very unsexy, sprawling stories of three men waiting backstage for — ahem — their turn. Mr. 600 is an aging porn legend; Mr. 137, a disgraced TV star desperate to prove his machismo; and Mr. 72, an adopted young man eager to connect with the film's star. Snuff is unavoidably distasteful at times but ultimately hard to resist. A-
