DAVE MATTHEWS BAND

For the entire summer, singer-guitarist Dave Matthews and crew will be jamming their way around the country. Selected dates: Burgettstown, Pa. (May 30-31), Noblesville, Ind. (July 25-26), and Berkeley, Calif. (Sept. 5-7).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You recently took part in an onstage discussion with the Dalai Lama. What was that like?
DAVE MATTHEWS, SINGER-GUITARIST: There's an organization called Seeds of Compassion that focuses on the teaching of compassion to kids. They came to Seattle, and there were different speakers: educators, scientists, Bishop Tutu, and also His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Initially I thought he would speak and then I would play. As it turned out, we had a conversation — which was actually a beautiful experience. We had a fist pound.

You did what now?
We pounded fists at the end. Like we'd just finished a basketball game.

Favorite tour-bus activity: Scrabulous or sex?
It wouldn't be a difficult decision. I love Scrabble, but I haven't played it online. And maybe Scrabble has a better chance now than when I was younger. But it's still a lazy, lazy distant second.
