This period piece is exactly what you'd expect from a Merchant Ivory production: a tragic tale of love set against a backdrop of opulent scenery. Directed by noted cinematographer Santosh Sivan, Before the Rains takes place in 1937 India, where an Englishman (Linus Roache) has settled to build a spice plantation. With his wife and kid back home, Henry falls for his married housekeeper (played with quiet intensity by Nandita Das). Unfortunately, the parade of consequences brought on by their affair has little emotional substance. C-
