With The Walker's pulpy premise about a middle-aged gay escort for Washington wives (a game, toupeed Harrelson) who's sucked into a murder, writer-director Paul Schrader's languid thriller could easily be reimagined as a juicy black-and-white noir from the '40s or '50s. As it is, the mash-up of well-appointed interiors and pricey apparel, political stench, and durable grandes dames (including a potty-mouthed Lauren Bacall) has auteurist flair but not much else. EXTRAS A superficial making-of — yet no commentary from Schrader, the guy who scripted Taxi Driver and helmed American Gigolo. C+
