Starry Night (1990)

In concert, Julio Iglesias has the kind of not-a-dry-seat-in-the-house appeal usually reserved for acts with younger fans. But where teen heartthrobs tend to rise and fall, the kid from Madrid just keeps going and going, sort of like the Energizer bunny of sex objects. Although the U.S. has proved somewhat more resistant to Juliomania than the rest of the planet, he does have a sizable following here, and Starry Night, his third album in English, seems to be aimed rather bluntly at ears that grew up with American radio. Iglesias warbles his way through 10 pop standards, from Leo Sayer's ''When I Need You'' to Nat King Cole's ''Mona Lisa,'' with arrangements that are spare, synthetic, and sweet as Cool Whip. His single-minded delivery seems designed to prove that he can make tunes as different as the Beatles' ''And I Love Her'' and Don McLean's ''Vincent (Starry Night)'' sound virtually identical.
