Recording Academy (2008)

Details Release Date: May 27, 2008; Lead Performance: John Hiatt; Genre: Rock

If there were a Grammy for Least Enticingly Named Album, then Same Old Man would surely secure a nod for Recording Academy favorite Hiatt. But that's the only problem with this CD, which finds Hiatt's country-tinged songwriting and mordant sense of humor in top form. The latter is showcased on rock shuffle ''Old Days,'' where he recalls playing for an audience that was smoking something ''that smelled exactly like cat pee.'' And thanks to such heartbreaking laments as ''Our Time'' and ''Hurt My Baby,'' he may very well have to break out his awards-ceremony tux again. B+
