On May 23, Rob Lowe (Brothers & Sisters), 44, and his wife, Sheryl, asked a Santa Barbara court to drop their $1 million suit against their
former chef Peter Clements. The couple, who were suing for breach of
contract, defamation, and trespass, had alleged that the ex-employee
stole prescription pills and had sex on their bed. They still have a
pair of $1 million defamation lawsuits pending against two former
nannies who are suing the Lowes for alleged sexual harassment.... On May
22 in NYC, the daughter of late jazz saxophonist Joe Farrell filed a
multimillion-dollar suit against Kanye West, 30, Common (né Lonnie
Rashid Lynn), 36, Method Man (né Clifford Smith), 37, and Redman (né Reginald Noble), 38, alleging that they illegally sampled Farrell's 1974
song ''Upon This Rock'' for hip-hop tracks.... On May 21 in Orlando,
ex-'N Sync and Backstreet Boys manager Lou Pearlman, 53, was sentenced
to 25 years in prison for conspiracy and money laundering. Pearlman, who
pleaded guilty in March to defrauding investors of $300 million, may
reduce his sentence by one month for every $1 million he repays.... New
York's governor gave a full and unconditional pardon to Slick Rick (né Ricky Walters), 43, on May 23. The London-born rapper, famed for
trendsetting '80s hits like ''Children's Story,'' is facing deportation
after being convicted of attempted murder and weapons possession in
1991. (He served a six-year prison term.) He can now petition a federal
court for permission to stay in the United States.
DEATHS
Composer Earle Hagen, 88, who wrote the themes for TV classics like The
Andy Griffith Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, after a long illness, May
26, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.... Photographer David Gahr, 85, who shot
iconic cover art for albums by Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, of
undisclosed causes, May 25, in Brooklyn.... Actor Rob Knox, 18, who'll
be seen as Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film, was fatally stabbed while reportedly trying to stop a bar fight, May 24, in London. (additional reporting by Stewart Allen)
LEGACY
Dick Martin (1922-2008)
The goofier half of Rowan & Martin whose racy 1968-73 Laugh-In revolutionized the TV variety show died of respiratory failure May 24 in
Santa Monica. While a cadre of new talent like Goldie Hawn and Lily
Tomlin embodied characters on the freewheeling series, Martin supplied the silly banter ''You bet your sweet bippy!'' with straight man Dan Rowan. ''He was a regular guy,'' recalls cast member JoAnne Worley, ''but he was randy. I just remember laughing so much.'' Tanner Stransky
