(FROM THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote some of the most celebrated sci-fi and fantasy screenplays in history before becoming known as an auteur of FX-free dramas like The Big Chill, has signed on to write the big-screen adaptation of Robotech, the 1980s TV anime favorite. Warner Bros. is distributing the film, based on the Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko Productions cartoon series about humanity using giant robots, developed from alien technology found in a spaceship crash in the South Pacific, to fight off waves of alien invaders. As in the '80s cartoon, which was cobbled together from three Japanese series and given new dialogue for American TV, the film is expected to focus on two young pilots who hold the key to humankind's survival. Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello brought the project to the studio; they'll be producing, along with I Am Legend screenwriter/producer Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven. Frank Agrama of Harmony Gold and Jason Nettler are aboard as executive producers.
Kasdan is best known for such grown-up dramas as The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist, and Wyatt Earp. Last year, Warner Bros. hired him write a remake of Clash of the Titans, marking his return to his genre roots. Before Big Chill, Kasdan wrote the screenplays for Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars installments The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (The Hollywood Reporter)
