Sam Raimi to Direct Dennis Lehane Adaptation

The ''Spider-Man'' helmer is on board to develop a film based on ''The Given Day,'' a novel set to be published in September

(FROM VARIETY) — Sam Raimi has added another project to his slate of upcoming films, agreeing to develop a movie adaptation of the forthcoming historical novel The Given Day by Dennis Lehane. Columbia recently acquired rights to the book, due to be published in September, with Raimi attached to direct and produce. The sweeping story is set in Boston in 1919, during a time of post-World War I turmoil.

Best known as the director of the Spider-Man movies, Raimi is also said to be considering a fourth go-around with the webslinger. Also on his docket: a reinvention of the Jack Ryan franchise.

Movies based on the darkly dramatic books by the Massachusetts-based Lehane have been popular in recent years. Clint Eastwood's Mystic River and Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone hit theaters with critical acclaim, and Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have been at work on an adaptation of Lehane's Shutter Island.
