(FROM VARIETY) — HBO is in need of some new original series, and Jim Carrey may have the answer. The comic actor is on board to cocreate and executive produce a half-hour series that's a throwback to his early days on the L.A. standup circuit. Comedian Lisa Lampanelli will star in the project, about a woman who unexpectedly inherits a comedy club.

Carrey got a career boost in the 1980s when he appeared on stage at the legendary Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip, where the matronly Mitzi Shore ran the show. These days, in addition to this HBO pilot, the actor has several feature films in the pipeline, including the dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris with Ewan McGregor, the funny flick Yes Man, and Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol.
