Step Up 2 the Streets (2008)

Step Up 2 the Streets could have been yet another substandard sequel spawned by the inexhaustible teen-dance-movie machine (see: Save the Last Dance 2, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, etc.), but this high-energy take-two really steps up its game. Amateur Andie (Briana Evigan) and classically trained Chase (Robert Hoffman) team up to take their routine to ''The Streets,'' a secret underground contest. You'll forgive the been-there, seen-that plot because the choreography is so fierce. There's no commentary breaking down the dances, but the disc does include videos from soundtrack artists like Missy Elliott and Flo Rida, a making-of with neophyte director Jon M. Chu (he vows never again to shoot a subway scene), and a doc on the real-life ''410,'' who battle Andie and Chase on screen. In a dance-off with the original, Step Up 2 wins for that rain-soaked street routine alone. B+
