The Dark Knight banked an astonishing $66.4 mil on Friday to set a new record for the biggest opening-day gross in box office history. The old mark of $59.8 mil was achieved by Spider-Man 3 in 2007. That film went on to earn $151.1 mil over the course of its first three-day frame, a sum that The Dark Knight now appears able to match.
Early Friday, the second Batman movie from star Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan also broke the record for the most money earned in midnight screenings, taking in $18.5 mil from shows that started at 12:01 a.m. Check in to EW.com on Sunday for a full weekend recap.
