Andrew Garfield as BOY A

Boy A is the story of a child criminal released into the world as a young adult. Yet the moment we meet Jack (Andrew Garfield), who was given the protective pseudonym ''Boy A'' during his trial, he's such a bashful, smiley-sweet wallflower you can't believe he did what he was accused of. This overly labored, underdramatized character study is arty and morose, yet it lacks the vision to portray Jack as anything but a victim. His simpering saintliness wears you out. C-
