Hollywood's attempts at realistically portraying (or even parodying) teenagers are often notoriously lame, and as a rule the soundtrack holds up better than the movie. This summer, we get the best of both worlds: a couple of movies with vastly different takes on high schoolers, both of which manage to ring true on screen and headphones.
At the gloomy end of the spectrum is Kids. Composed primarily of original songs by Folk Implosion, a side project of Sebadoh founder-guitarist-singer Lou Barlow, it is as dark, beautiful, and uncommercial as the film it accompanies. The eight Folk cuts are fairly new territory, even for fans of Sebadoh's edgier indie fare. But the haunting, gritty results are surprisingly addictive for a score. While you couldn't imagine the film's characters (who favor the Beastie Boys) throwing this on, it conjures perfectly their hollow world. A
