Sonogram

AKlaff is an established sideman in avant-garde circles, but he's making his debut as a leader with Sonogram. He has instilled a comfortably rambling sense of interaction in his quintet, drawing reedy luster from saxists John Stubblefield and Carlos Ward and otherworldly tones from guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Compositions like ''Alligator and Kangaroo'' contrast slippery rhythms — with aKlaff playing all around the beat — and squirrelly melodies from the closely voiced horns. This album shows him hot on the trail of a new strain of accessible yet adventurous fusion. B
