On Sunshine Lies' opener ''Time Machine'' Matthew Sweet asks a temporal transport
device to ''let me into the future.'' Frankly, we'd rather he went back to
the past specifically 1991, when the psychedelically inclined Nebraskan
released his classic Girlfriend. Alas, the plodding likes of ''Burn
Through Love'' and ''Room to Rock'' are a long way from Sweet's finest
work, even if the Byrdsy, uh, ''Byrdgirl'' proves that not all his best
days are behind him. C+
