On Sunshine Lies' opener ''Time Machine'' Matthew Sweet asks a temporal transport device to ''let me into the future.'' Frankly, we'd rather he went back to the past — specifically 1991, when the psychedelically inclined Nebraskan released his classic Girlfriend. Alas, the plodding likes of ''Burn Through Love'' and ''Room to Rock'' are a long way from Sweet's finest work, even if the Byrdsy, uh, ''Byrdgirl'' proves that not all his best days are behind him. C+
