Knots Landing's Kevin Dobson plays a hardware-store owner who begins to suspect that his best friend, played by Major Dad's Gerald McRaney, is an international smuggler and hit man. Mystery, suspense? There's none, because early on we see that McRaney's character has applied a goatee and dark glasses as a disguise, and then watch as this vaguely comical figure as-sassinates a couple of people. It's just a matter of time before Dobson confronts McRaney. But a lot of Fatal Friendship is consumed with macho prattle about the profound bond between men — these pals arm-wrestle a lot, and look into each other's eyes to ask tough questions like ''How far would you go to protect what was yours?'' The idea of screenwriter Bill Driskill is to set up the men's ultimate confrontation as something more than a thriller's climax — we're supposed to think it's a moving test of friendship. Instead, it just seems like a lot of bull. D
