A cellist and studio whiz, Russell cut grooves that ignited NYC's underground disco scene and crafted classical experiments with Philip Glass — yet only a fraction of his work ever saw daylight before his death from AIDS in 1992. This doc is worth watching just to hear some of those dazzling unreleased tunes. But the touching tributes by Russell's avant-garde colleagues, Iowan parents, and devoted partner will stick in your memory even longer.
