A young Russian who mysteriously pops up in Hamburg is at the center of A Most Wanted Man, the latest from John le Carré, king of the modern spy novel. As an international nest of spies closes in around the Russian, le Carré smoothly blows smoke around the guy. But the shadier the mystery man's story gets, the more aimless the book becomes, before culminating in a stinger that feels stingless. Not one of the king's finest. C+
