Tool is one heavy metal band that's always a step ahead of the doofus police, primarily because its main man Maynard is a brainiac art-school grad who knows how to get heads banging and minds churning. His new band, A Perfect Circle, co-helmed by guitarist Billy Howerdel, is less ominous, with the album Mer de Noms leavening guitar shrapnel with genuinely pretty melodies and frilly production flourishes — kinda like neo-Metallica, but with cojones.
