If the Y2K non-meltdown didn't reinforce one's faith in machinery, Chicane's ''Don't Give Up'' will: a very fine trance single featuring, of all pockmarked people, Bryan Adams. British techno act Nick Bracegirdle's latest spatial work doesn't achieve the rhapsodic splendor of the best trance, but Adams' voice, filtered and buried to the point of unrecognizability, makes for a scruffy hook. But wait — isn't an Adams techno crossover a sign of the apocalypse? B+
