Details Writer: Nevada Barr; Genres: Fiction, Mystery and Thriller; Publisher: Putnam

In her eighth outing, Anna Pigeon — professional park ranger and amateur sleuth — gets transplanted from Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park to Mississippi, where she finds herself wading through brain-melting heat and tree-smothering kudzu to solve a brutal homicide. Complicating the matter are a handful of Civil War reenactors, as well as sexist colleagues who resent having a female boss. Plus, someone thinks it's clever to use a live alligator as a weapon. In Deep South, Nevada Barr's deft touch with both characters and plot ensures total immersion for the reader, down to the suffocating humidity and swamp stench. A-
