Poor Veruca Salt: In 1995, they were criticized for not being "indie" enough; two years later their new metallic muscle was condemned as opportunism. With Nina Gordon gone solo, Louise Post has kept the name and the sound — a defanged L7. Tortured ballad with strings? Check. Quiet verses and explosive chorus? Check. Despite some catchy spots, Resolver strains to make an impression. Both alterna-cred and commercial superstardom may always elude them. C+
