  Between Here and April

Elizabeth Burns, the narrator of Deborah Copaken Kogan's uneven, engrossing novel, Between Here and April, finds herself wondering about the disappearance of a first-grade friend. But a creepy childhood mystery balloons into a larger, messier novel about sexual violence, the ''work-life balance,'' and Elizabeth's marital woes. Kogan overreaches here, but watching her do so can be pretty interesting. B
