Everyone in Grace's class says she can't be Peter Pan in the school play. ''You can't be Peter that's a boy's name,'' says one child. ''You can't be Peter Pan,'' whispers another. ''He isn't black.'' But Grace is a girl who loves stories, and in her own imaginative games, she's already been a pirate, Anansi the spider, Hiawatha, and Joan of Arc. Bolstered by her loving Ma and Nana who prove to her that she can be anything Grace flies through the audition and wins the part unanimously.
Illustrator Caroline Binch's wonderful realistic watercolors, radiant with affection and playfulness, make Grace one of the most buoyantly lovable picture-book characters around. Amazing Grace's perfect marriage of illustrations and text by Mary Hoffman is a heart-lifting pleasure. A
