My Favorite Summer 1956 (1991)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Writer: Mickey Mantle; Genres: Memoir, Nonfiction, Sports; Publisher: Doubleday

Nobody who has read Mickey Mantle's 1986 autobiography, The Mick, would expect insightful analysis from No. 7. So, it's not surprising that My Favorite Summer has all the breeziness of a chat at the bar. Sure, it's fun while you're there, but you don't remember much about it later. The year 1956 was an eventful one for Mantle — he won the Triple Crown, leading both leagues in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in, and his team won the World Series — but here he's more interested in remembering his high times and good friends off the field than his incredible accomplishments on it.
