Details Lead Performance: Maureen McGovern; Genres: Holiday, Pop

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas. Everywhere you go for the next month, those songs will be playing: ''White Christmas,'' ''Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,'' ''Silent Night.'' Sometimes it's enough to make you scream. And yet, every once in a while, you'll hear a new version that puts flavor back into those old chestnuts.

Maureen McGovern has done it, and her achievement may be the most remarkable of all because she's a pop singer smack dab in the middle of the road. When you listen to her sing such familiar tunes as ''Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,'' you can't help comparing her with the Crosbys, Sinatras, and Streisands. But Christmas With Maureen McGovern stands up to the challenge. Drawing upon her experience on Broadway and in nightclubs, McGovern brings an extra smidgen of personality to her singing with her sharp theatricality. You truly believe that she's ''dreaming of a white Christmas'' as her voice floats softly through the tune. And on ''The Christmas Tree,'' she's as crisp and clear as a winter night. A-
