Details Lead Performance: Dilated Peoples

Hoping to prove underground hip-hop is more a state of mind than of penury, L.A.'s great hopefuls Dilated Peoples follow 1998's indie revelation ''Work the Angles'' (included here) with some sharp major-label geometry on The Platform. The rhythm matrix between rappers Evidence and Rakaa/Iriscience and Beat Junkie DJ Babu is a textbook for how to build turntablist trickery into bona fide songs. If the MCs found more topics beyond their own mic skills, they'd be working all the angles. B+
