Carolyn Chute (The Beans of Egypt, Maine) deserves points for ambition.
The School on Heart's Content Road, her sprawling new novel, incorporates dozens of voices, from the ruminations of crows to the kooky interior monologue of a 6-year-old. But while her material is lively — the plot revolves around a controversial polygamous commune in Maine — her storytelling is so jumpy and shrill that reading this book is both a challenge and a drag.
