Zwick felt a personal connection to Defiance, based on the true story of three tough Jewish brothers from Belarus (Craig, Schreiber, and Jamie Bell) who evaded the Nazis while protecting other Jews. ''I had relatives in the Holocaust,'' says the director. Despite an A-list cast, the shoot in remote Lithuania was far from cushy. ''It was the dead of winter,'' says Schreiber, ''and we're running around in period clothing.''
