Beautiful Russian teen Sashenka rejects her privileged family's lifestyle by becoming a revolution-era Bolshevik and, later, a dedicated Communist under Stalin. Then an affair sets off a chain of events that leads to her arrest. Sashenka's youth is not as consuming as her adult life, but Simon Montefiore is more than adept at portraying the terror of Stalin's rule with Sashenka, this sobering novel. B+
