On Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver, a surprisingly heartfelt tribute to the late folkie wuss (compiled by Red House Painter Mark Kozelek), melancholic indie-rockers like Low and the Innocence Mission give Denver's dippiness emotional heft. Denver could be a depressing dude (''Still I try to smile, but I just feel exhausted, pale, and cold'' from ''Poems, Prayers, and Promises''), and his songs are actually well-suited to these sincere, contemplative interpretations.
