The Feud (1990)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Movie Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Drama; With: Rene Auberjonois; Distributors: Castle Hill Productions and Vidmark

With the exception of Little Big Man, Thomas Berger's novels curdle into bad quirkiness on-screen. Remember Neighbors? The Feud is better than that botch, but not by much.

Featuring a cast of character actors exploding in 20 different directions, the film is Hatfields-and-McCoys played for absurdist comedy. Director Bill D'Elia's background in commercials shows both in the precise visuals and in his inability to handle a cast this size (he just leaves the cow-pasture gate open and lets everyone bonk into each other at will). Still, Rene Auberjonois' performance as a bogus preacher is a ranting, scary marvel: It burns a hole through the plot and all by itself makes this scattershot goof worth watching. C
