3. SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH on HBO
Chris Lilley's high-school-spoof characters (juvenile delinquent, mean
girl, and pompous drama teacher) are horrible, so why is his show so
hilarious? Because he nails them.
MOVIES
4. A CHRISTMAS TALE
Catherine Deneuve leads a cast of all-stars (directed by Arnaud
Desplechin) playing the matriarch of an irrepressible, fractured family
brought together but never brought down by her illness.

BOOKS
7. MORE INFORMATION THAN YOU REQUIRE, by John Hodgman
He's a PC, but he's also a comic, a hobo expert, and an author, sharing
more truthy facts than you can shake a pig's spleen at. (Yes, there is a
chapter on pig spleens.)
MOVIES
8. MATHIEU ALMARIC in 'Quantum of Solace'
Almaric (who costars in A Christmas Tale) is in the grand tradition of
smarmy, effete villains who are all the more evil for seeming so benign.
He's the perfect foil for alpha hunk Bond.
STAGE
9. BILLY ELLIOT on Broadway
Sir Elton John composed the tunes in a stage adaptation that beautifully
translates the film's exuberance.
