Horse Opera (1990)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Riders in the Sky; Genre: Country

For the uninitiated, the Riders are three ingenious saddle pals — they actually dress in cowboy costume — who combine offbeat comedy in the style of old-time radio skits with classic and contemporary Western tunes, poking fun at the old trail songs. What makes it work in Horse Opera, is the trio's eminent musicianship (guitar, fiddle, and string bass) and Doug Green's hair-raising yodel, best demonstrated here on Elton Britt's ''Maybe I'll Cry Over You'' and Green's own ''Homecoming Yodel.''
