Usually, Scrubs' trademark fantasy sequences are hilarious. Sometimes they're just weird. Creator Bill Lawrence highlights three of the latter.
Floating-Head Doctor
J.D. (Zach Braff) dreams that his head can separate and float free from his
body, allowing him to be in two places at once. Repeatedly. ''A lot of
the fans don't like the longer, surreal ones that make me laugh,'' says
Lawrence. ''My problem is once something cracks me up, I do it over and
over. It's a horrible crutch as a comedy writer.''
The Butt Man
Elliot (Sarah Chalke) discovered a man with a rear end on his front end. ''I
had to argue with the network over how much of a fake butt I could
show,'' says Lawrence. ''It's obviously not real. They're like, 'That's
irrelevant. You can't show a fake plastic ass crack.' To have spent that
much time fighting for that and have it not be that funny was odd.''
Pumpkin Patch Kid
Turk (Donald Faison) brings a pumpkin home from the patch instead of his
baby, and he and Carla (Judy Reyes) raise it as their own. ''At its
college graduation they drop the pumpkin,'' explains Lawrence, ''then see
their actual [human] son and he gets hit by a bus. It made us laugh, but
a bunch of people were forever angered.''
